CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP The Air Force launched an inertially guided Atlas missile on a 5000 mile Atlantic range test successfully meeting all primary objectives. The test checked the inertial guidance system and the ability to receive steering commands while reentry was aimed at a water target in the South Atlantic.

U S Plane Last Heard Near Soviet Territory

An American RB47 reconnaissance bomber disappeared on a mapping mission northern of the Soviet Kola Peninsula. Six crewmen were aboard Capt. Eugene E. Posa Capt. Willard G. Palm Lt. Freeman B. Olmstead Lt. John R. McKone Lt. Dean B. Phillips and Oscar L. Goforth. The missing plane took off from a British base to map electromagnetic fields north of Norway and search planes moved to Bodoe to scour the Barents Sea region.

Federal Suit Against Saco Lowell Delayed

Federal Judge Edward T. Gignoux postponed statements from witnesses in the government antitrust suit against Saco-Lowell shops and Maremont Automotive Products of Chicago until August 15 in Portland. The government charges intent to monopolize muffler sales and to shut down Saco-Lowell’s Edwards plant in Saco. Maremont disputes the claim of controlling interest and asserts it will not shut the plant.

Drowning Death Opens Maine Holiday Weekend

The Associated Press reports Maine opened one of its largest holiday weekends with a drowning death. Two-year-old Susan Lee Greenlaw of Milltown fell into Beddybemps Lake, the first fatality as authorities monitor crowded roads and waterways. Officials recall last year’s Independence Day tragedy with eight drownings and one fatal motorist injury.
