Vacation pay boosts Biddeford Saco area workers

Over 300000 in vacation pay was distributed by Pepperell Manufacturing and Saco-Lowell, the two largest local employers. Most plants will shut for July 4 with Edwards I not closing next week. Pepperell plans one week of vacation for eligible workers while others delay shutdowns to support area economic growth.

Biddeford Welcomes Visitors Courtesy Parking Tickets

City aims to attract shoppers by issuing courtesy parking tickets to out of state visitors in July and August. City Clerk Ralph Binette notes cooperation with Mayor Clement Deschambault, the police department, and the chamber of commerce. The program, used previously in Biddeford and in other Maine towns, includes a polite notice urging cooperation with Biddeford’s parking system.

Truck Flips As Lights Fail In New Hampshire

A tractor-trailer loaded with dressed poultry tipped into a ditch early today when the truck’s lights failed. Driver Carl F. Suhr, 35, of Freeport Maine, said he switched to high beam to read a road sign and the unit overturned after leaving the road. Suhr was not injured. The poultry was transferred to another truck.

Saco Tax Policy Shows Early Gains and Savings

Seco's 1 percent discount for real estate taxes paid before July 15 is drawing early revenue. City Clerk Clifford A. Purvis said $50,000 has been collected by Tax Collector Catherine L. Khrushchev meets apathetic Austria on state visit

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev arrived in neutral Austria for a nine day state visit to project peaceful coexistence amid a largely bored public. Ex Miss Maine Enters Contest in Miami

Lewiston report notes Terry Tripp Miss Maine 1958 leaves Friday for Miami to compete in the Miss Universe contest.
