A bill to create a Maine Power Authority to build and operate a Cross Rock hydro project on the upper St. John proposes a $50,000 initial appropriation. The five member board would include the governor as chairman and two appointees from each of the first two districts. The plan envisions a $168.6 million development near St Francis Allagash, flooding about 200000 acres to generate 1677 million kilowatt hours annually, with land seizures allowed and revenue bonds issued. State officials warned the project would devastate the Allagash wilderness and rival tidal plans.
James H. Meredith announced plans to enroll for the spring term at the University of Mississippi. The 29 year old Negro, the first and only person of his race admitted, told reporters the Negro is not going while he himself will attend. He said he pondered the decision for several days and weighed public sentiment.
Airman Gerald M. Anderson, 25, released from Mountain Home Base stockade after about ten months on murder charges. A fellow airman’s wife and son were found dead. another man confessed in November, leading to Anderson’s civil release before Air Force trial. Anderson seeks early discharge and plans to resume duties.
