Mitchell Defends Steel Pay The Detroit wage settlement defense by Labor Secretary
AP reports Secretary James P. Mitchell defended the steel wage settlement as aligned with other postwar deals and not inflationary. He warned there should be no steel price increases for a time, believing both sides will boost productivity. Mitchell spoke at the Economic Club of Detroit, asserting a last major steel strike could be behind us. He noted the settlement halves the postwar wage increase trend and clarified employment cost terms versus wages and benefits.
