Biddeford Cab Driver Fined $650 in Liquor Violations
Eugene Caouette a 59 year old Biddeford taxi operator was fined 650 and received suspended jail terms on two of three liquor charges after a municipal court plea. He faced one sale charge 500 fine and 30 days jail suspended on probation two years. A second charge 150 fine and 60 days jail suspended on probation concurrent with the first. A third charge a second offense was filed on inspector Timothy Murphy’s recommendation. Nine pints of whiskey were seized during the raid led by Murphy and George Dutille.

Castro rejects U.S. protests over Cuban expropriations

Canadian Legion Unit Elects Officers at Biddeford Meeting
Macmillan post and auxiliary officers were chosen last night at the annual meeting held at Miss Ora Cookson’s home in Biddeford. Mrs Alfred Chasse was elected president with officers including Mrs Rose Arc, first vice president Mrs Malvina Miles, second vice president Mrs Rilta Toussaint, chaplain Mrs Edna Mahoney, secretary Mrs Sarah Metcalf, treasurer Miss Cookson, sergeant at arms Mrs Clara Blouin, and flag bearers Mrs Lydia Wentzell and Miss Cookson. The retiring president received a standing ovation. Installation of new officers is set for February 8 at Mrs Edna Mahoney’s home. Plans for a scholarship fund were discussed, with Miss Cookson appointed to oversee the project. The mystery award went to Miss Cookson and lunch followed.

Thieves Take Safe From Brooks and Drew Garage
Buick burglars drove a vehicle into the Brooks and Drew automobile garage early today and carted off a 600 pound safe containing 150 to 200 dollars. Commissioner William F. MacDonald noted the heist resembled a June 1923 Bennett Chevrolet Garage theft where a safe held 900 dollars in cash and checks. The empty safe was later found in Manchester with no arrests. The burglars forced four doors, knocked off the dial, and fled with the safe in an apparently vain attempt to open it.
