Telstar engineers solve decoder fault after radiation spike
W C Hittinger of Bell said Telstar hit radiation in the Van Allen belt 100 times higher than expected causing ionization in the decoder. The reverse bias voltage interfered with the transistor, so engineers cut off the voltage by disconnecting storage batteries and used a trick code to restore function. Laboratory tests on a similar decoder helped diagnose and overcome the issue.
