Washington reports that the federal minimum wage will rise to 2.30 per hour on New Year’s Day as part of 1974 amendments to the Fair Labor Standards Act. The change lifts over 1.2 million nonfarm workers from 2.10 to 2.30 and sets a timetable for annual increases to curb inflationary impact.
In Saco four elementary schools, parents drift from a global PTA to school specific advisory committees. In New Hyde Park New York a man Jack Victor 41 died after shoving his 12 year old son William Victor to safety moments before being struck by a car driven by Donald Swacey 24 of Queens Police did not file charges. The incident occurred in front of Hillside United Methodist Church where Victor had attended a Christmas Eve service. The boy described his father’s final act as saving his life.
A powerful winter storm snarled travel across Maine and New England as snow and freezing rain fell Thursday night into today. The region faced hazardous roads, with 16 inches already buried earlier in the week and the turnpike enforcing a 45 mph limit. Accidents occurred in Saco and Biddeford area as police reported several wrecks and damaged vehicles.

In Newport Tennessee a Christmas dawn gun battle at the Red Lantern Inn left four dead and two wounded. Officials say the firefight may be revenge for an ambush that wounded prison escapee Laymond last week. Laymond, 24, was killed by return fire after fatally wounding three men. Names of three other deceased were Gary Miller, 29, Steve Valentine, 18, and Ricky Cochran, 25. Wounded were Danny Davis, 20, and James Stinnett, with conditions listed. Laymond had long tied to murder and armed robbery. A robbery check found on his body linked him to recent burglaries.
