British Aimed To Put Harbor Out Of Business

On June 16 1814 a British force approached Biddeford Pool Winter Harbor during the War of 1812. About 150 men arrived in five boats from HMS Bulwark and landed at Stage Island then sailed to the Pool meeting Capt Thomas Cutts who greeted them under a white flag. Local militia hurriedly gathered as alarm bells rang and drums beat signaling a tense confrontation in the prosperous shipbuilding town.

War Year Militia fights British at the Pool in 1814

The Biddeford militia, forming ranks and examining powder, marched to the Pool as Lt. Seymour of the British landing party sought destruction. Capt. Millne arrived ashore, battles ensued, ships were burned or ransomed, and a store looted before escape. The narrative continues on Page 12.

Spectre of Germ Warfare Is Raised

Washington report by Jack Anderson alleges the Soviet Union steps up germ warfare research in violation of the UN convention. A Soviet diplomat at the embassy is said to have sought information from U.S. scientists about genetic engineering and germ defense. FBI and NIH security offices were alerted as Stepanov reportedly acknowledged talks with scientists, claiming positive uses only.

Old Orchard Beach faces a legacy of 68 tabled issues from the outgoing town council many of which were placed on a separate agenda and remain unacted. MMC Day Rates Rising at Maine Medical Center

Maine Medical Center, the state’s largest general hospital, will raise day rates on January 1. Semi private room rates go from 75.50 to 81 and private rooms from 87.50 to 93. The increase, the first since October 1974, funds higher nursing costs and expanded patient care. President Edward C. Andrews Jr. cites more open heart cases, severe blood diseases, burns, terminal cancer, and a need to reward salaried staff with pay raises.

Durkin Wyman Top New England Story of 1975

Merchants nationwide report a strong Christmas season with double digit gains over last year. Luxury items such as digital watches, color televisions and mood rings sold well while standard goods like clothing and furniture also rose. Executives cited 25 percent gains at Capitol Court Milwaukee and notable increases in Washington Richmond Atlanta and St. Louis. The mood among shoppers was more confident with money to spend.
