Lewiston fire chief credits a new fire attack plan and dedicated crews for preventing a major textile mill blaze from becoming a citywide disaster. An explosion and fire at the W. S. Libbey mill killed two people as fighters labored through extreme danger to stop the inferno.
Mr and Mrs Haley Booth of Biddeford sold ten and a half acres on Goose Rocks Road to Mr and Mrs Frederick Van Veen of Concord Mass through The John D Downing Agency Inc. Firefighters used a new 65 foot Snorkel to battle a blaze near the Libbey plant with mutual aid from five counties.
A state wide series opens Tuesday December 19 at Young School Saco at 7 30 p m with Maine Department of Educational and Cultural Services Maine Municipal Association and Maine School Management Association hosting. Legislators officials and citizens are invited to discuss tax sources system weaknesses and potential financing solutions for local state public school costs. Speakers include Dr Carroll McGary John Salisbury Lawin Millett and Asa Gordon.
About 240 student musicians from Park Street Beginners Band Park Street Band Kennebunk Junior High and Senior High Concert Band will present a rehearsal showing at 7 30 p m in the Kennebunk High School gym. At the December trustees meeting the New England Electric Railway Historical Society announced a $300 grant from the Maine State Commission on the Arts and Humanities to fund restoration of streetcar 31 of the Biddeford and Saco Railroad. The commission funds come from the Maine legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts. The project follows a 1972 grant that started restoration after over 1,000 hours of summer work on the car.
Maine authorities ship 101 350 dog tags to clerks in all municipalities as part of the annual licensing program. Dogs six months old on Jan 1 or becoming six months old must be licensed by Jan 1, 1973, with rabies vaccination required within the prior two years.
