Clearwater Sailing the Muddy Hudson Makes Maiden Docking

AP News reports Pete Seeger guiding the 96-foot sloop Clearwater to its maiden docking in Manhattan as a river conservation mission begins. The crew of volunteers sings Heave Away Haul Away while spectators greet the replica Hudson River schooner designed to promote cleanup and love of the river. The vessel sails from Maine with a 20-man crew for weekend festivals linking antipollution efforts to local history and river care.

Flood Swirling In Virginia

Floodwaters swirled through eastern Virginia as James River receded in Richmond. The disaster left 60 known dead and dozens more missing or feared dead in western Virginia. Continued on Page Two.

The Associated Press reports the Gulf Coast and flooded Virginia struggle to recover as the search for Camille victims continues and many are still missing along the battered coast. In Prague the government pushes strict laws to suppress antigovernment activity as the Soviet invasion's first anniversary passes.

Fires Rampage Across Southern California In Record Heat

More than 1,800 residents fled as fires burned unchecked across vast brush and grassland in Southern California. North of San Diego County 1,500 were ordered out overnight as 45,000 acres burned. Camp Pendleton sparked a large blaze spreading east, near Fallbrook, threatening homes and a trailer park. In El Cajon a 90 acre fire destroyed six houses. Three major fires burned in San Diego County and others in San Bernardino County. Temperatures hit near 118 degrees with humidity around 10 percent, fanned by winds through dry conditions. Evacuation centers opened as authorities battled the flames and smog alerts persisted.

Year Biddeford Went Dry in 1946 Vote

In Biddeford on September 9 1946 voters approved a ban on on premises malt liquor sales after churches urged a dry stance. The election toppled 20 beer parlors and private clubs, with liquor outlets shifting to restaurants and other businesses by early 1947. Numerous establishments closed or converted, and a long term impact followed as taverns shut their doors or repurposed.
