Union and Saco-Lowell Trade New Pact Details

The Putnam Valve, newly moved into building 14 of the former Saco-Lowell shops, will start operations in ten days to two weeks. Joseph L. Putnam, general manager, says 50,000 shares of common stock at four dollars each are being sold, with over half sold in New England and Maine to follow. The Houston-origin plant began about 15 months ago, aiming at ball valve production with plastics options, operating in 16,000 square feet. Training will start on the job, with future employment numbers not yet set. The company serves U S and Canadian markets via manufacturers’ reps.

Razing Of Station Ends The Dummy Line End of a local era

The old Camp Ellis station marks the end of the Dummy line once serving Old Orchard to Camp Ellis. After 43 years and a hundred rides daily, the line closed September 5 1923 as automobiles took over. The wood-fired steam engine and two open cars carried 12 to 15 trips daily, with passengers waving handkerchiefs to signal the halt and crews sharing coffee along the route.

Teacher Not Opposed To Dwyers Bid

SOUTH PARIS MAINE AP A South Paris teacher Ruth Cushman denied advising Gov Reed to deny further sentence reduction for Paul Dwyer, who seeks another commutation after 22 years for murder and after parole. Cushman said she talked to assistant secretary of state Paul McDonald and never wrote to the governor. She denied a Norway street scene and said no feud exists with Caroline Pinkos. Dwyer, paroled to life with 28 years five months, has concerns about marriage plans and letters from Cushman to his mother.

Rocket Plane Sets Speed Record at 2150 MPH

At Edwards Air Force Base California NA S astronaut test pilot Joe Walker soared in an X15 to 2150 miles per hour, beating the unofficial 1956 mark by 56 mph. He survived the mission, flying a 78 000 foot dive then a controlled landing after a 10 degree nose dive. Grace Walker and their two sons watched from a nearby yard as the craft reached Mach 3.3 before burn out in about four minutes of powered flight.

Wage Jump Asked by TWUA at Saco-Lowell

Preliminary talks between Saco-Lowell shops and Local 406 TWUA AFL-CIO opened this afternoon. The union seeks 15 percent wage increases effective Sept 15 this year and 15 cents more per hour starting Sept 15, 1961, plus vacation benefits, two holidays, better health and accident coverage, and changes in contract language.
