The board debated boundary lines for limited residential and general development zones from Buxton to the ocean, while the River Corridor Commission retains final say and may require action by April 26. Local residents pressed for resource protection in parts of the river, and officials emphasized that local zoning can be more restrictive than the corridor’s plan.

Local Surfers Seek 15-Yard Area Denied by Town Council

Old Orchard Beach town officials tabled Kevin Sullivan’s bid to create a 15 yard surfing zone south of the pier. Present rules allow year round surfing 6 pm to 9 am June through Labor Day, but councilors raised safety concerns for swimmers and children. Sullivan proposed a rope system and area marking, and said the group would fund and maintain the zone. If not approved, the surfers may pursue a referendum with a primary looming June 11. The meeting also approved a $300 Milestone Foundation grant and discussed funds for Goosefare Brook pollution efforts and a Charlotte Clough garage replacement.
