Deadly crash of C5A Galaxy shatters mercy flight for orphans

In Saigon a United States Air Force C5A Galaxy carrying 243 Vietnamese orphans and 53 adults crashed after takeoff. At least 73 dead include 40 orphans. 30 more trapped. Witnesses describe two explosions and a sprawling field fire as rescuers battled mud and debris.

Unemployment Rises to 8.7 Percent in March

Washington officials reported the March unemployment rate jumped to 8.7 percent with about eight million jobless. Nearly 200,000 jobs were lost while the labor force grew by 300,000, pushing overall unemployment higher for a sixth straight month.

Snowstorm Strikes New England With Heavy Snow and Fatalities

A spring storm blankets the East with 12 to 20 inches of snow across Vermont New Hampshire and Maine while western Massachusetts and parts of New York see heavy snow and high winds. Fatal accidents occur in Massachusetts and Maine as gusts up to hurricane force lash coasts and inland roads become treacherous.
