Strong Winegar nine travels to Bessemer for a Sunday 2 30 game at the city ball park carving a league clash. Ironwood, Montreal, Hurley, Saxon, and Mellen also on local schedule with last week results cited.
In a come from behind opening Northern league game, Bessemer rallied to beat Ironwood 8 7 at the local park Sunday afternoon. Tron wood sparked a 5 1 seventh inning lead as Ironwood led early with four errors aiding Bessemer. Erickson earned the win for Bessemer while Wieland held the hosts to two singles for five innings. Several hundred fans attended, including a band parade and remarks by County Chairman Frank Abelman prior to the game.
Walter Nemacheck among 136 Lawrence College sophomores at Appleton Wisconsin named on honor roll for outstanding achievement. The group exempt from final examinations after a Carnegie Foundation sponsored comprehensive exam covering all undergraduate fields. Names include Walter Nemacheck of Bessemer and Alicia Kumpula of Wakefield.
Saturday May 31 is registration day for qualified school electors in Bessemer not yet registered or changing precincts. Precincts one and four register at Washington school, precinct two at High School, precinct three at Barber school. Three school board candidates: M. A. Hagerman and Jane Q. Massie seek re-election, joined by D. J. Kulaszewicz. Township boards also vote on June 7 with Knoll and Eidemiller seeking re-election in their roles.
John Cvengros a 29 year old Merchants and Miners National Bank teller in Ironwood waived preliminary examination after being arraigned in Marquette on embezzlement charges. He is bound over to federal court at Sault Ste. Marie for trial June 2. Cvengros vanished amid a $2,408 cash shortfall, later surrendering in Menominee. The bank bond covers up to $25,000. He was a well known local figure with family ties to Ironwood leadership.
Joe Baletto aged 37 of this city suffered a fractured skull Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a car driven by Leonard Erickson on Main street near the Lonyyears street corner. He was taken to Grand View hospital and remained unconscious for about 14 hours. Erickson testified he blew his horn as Baletto crossed. Baletto did not stop, a fender struck him, and his head hit the pavement.
At a county board meeting Tuesday, a chancery suit was filed against Victoria Copper Mining Co. over Lake Gogebic water levels. Property owners demand restoration from the 30 inch level, citing damages to shore properties. A. H. Ryall of Escanaba, attorney for power interests, will meet the county committee next Wednesday June 4 at the courthouse. The power companies may seek a out-of-court settlement.
Among 154 Michigan Gold Star mothers who will visit American cemeteries in France this summer, ten are from the upper peninsula. Names include Mrs. Anna L. Budlong of DeTour, Mrs. Excilla Menard of Gladstone, Mrs. Ruth Woolford of Escanaba, Mrs. Julia Morrison of Ironwood, Mrs. Emma Weed of Watersmeet, Mrs. Clara D. Gauthier of South Range, Mrs. J. Laduron of Menominee, Mrs. Minnie Eva Greenlard of Onfoloha gen, Mrs. Adeline Mercure of Mapistique, and Mrs. Julia A. Morrison of Germfask.
The township board of review in Bessemer will be in session at Ramsey town hall west Tuesday June 3. The board will also meet on Monday June ? Manistee Branch of Americas Paper Box Manufacturing Company will be established there.
Mrs Simon Bonka aged 39 ended her life at home in Verona last Thursday by shooting herself with a 30 30 rifle. Her son found the body on returning from a doctor's visit. Ill health was given as the cause. She had sought medical relief at Ashlands and Rochester hospitals for years. Survived by husband two sons and a daughter. Burial was at Wakefield Sunday afternoon.
A Michigan Public Utility Information Bureau warning alerts radio owners and technicians to danger from increased plate voltage in modern AC radio receivers. Incidents include a death after attempting to attach a speaker, with risks from high no load transformer voltages and charged filter condensers even when unplugged. Disconnecting power reduces risk but may not eliminate it.
The board of education will open bids on June 4 for painting work at Tilden Olcott and Barber schools. Exterior painting planned for Tilden and Olcott, plus interior work at Tilden and Barber schools.
Local resident Walter Maki of this city is reported to be on the honor roll at Ferris Institute in Big Rapids Michigan after achieving high marks in six studied subjects during the term.
Sagisawa Boence Brothers received a contract to construct a new home and the office building for Peoples Building and Loan Association. The project will expand the association's facilities and be built under local housing development plans.

Obituary notices the death of Mrs. James McNeil of Negaunee at Ishpeming hospital on Saturday May 17 aged 187 years. She was mother to Emerson D. McNeil of Virginia Minnesota general manager of Corrigan McKinney Steel Co. She leaves three sons and two daughters. Burial was in Negaunee on Monday May 18.
Madeline Anna Chiambretti 22 died at home after a year long illness. Born April 27 1908 in Bessemer she attended local grade schools and lived with her parents Louis and (Mrs) Chiambretti. Survived by her parents sister Mrs Josephine Recolla and brother Battista. Funeral Monday at 9 from St Sebastian Church with Rev Charles Swoboda officiating. interment Hillrest Cemetery.
Mrs. Joseph Serra, 62, died Wednesday afternoon in a Duluth hospital of bronchial pneumonia. A Bessem er resident for 36 years, she moved to Duluth to live with her daughter Mrs Harvey Schade. Born November 2, 1868 in Brez Austria, she married in this city and is survived by three daughters Mrs Harvey Schade of Duluth Minn Mrs Harry Hilton of Anoka Minn and Miss Josephine Serra a Chicago teacher. Also two sisters Mrs Angelo Cavosie of this city Mrs Menghini of Denver Col and a brother in Italy. Funeral services are set for Saturday morning at St Sebastian church with Rev Charles Swoboda officiating. Pallbearers named and burial in Hillrest cemetery.
Funeral services for Joseph Chart, a well known pioneer resident, were conducted Tuesday at 2:00 PM from his home with Rev. Charles Swobo da officiating. A requiem mass followed at St Sebastian's Church after forty hour devotions. Pallbearers included N. D. Massie Emil Schaefer and George St John with burial at Hillrest.
John Green of Puritan received severe burns to face neck and arms Tuesday afternoon around 1 50 o clock while underground in the Fronton mine an electric accident occurred He was taken to his home for treatment and recovery was pursued through the afternoon.

A ten student geology field party from Michigan State College, led by S G Bergquist and with L C Hulbert, will survey pre-Cambrian flows north of Bessemer near water tanks on Friday May 30. The trip forms part of the 2016 mile field voyage through the Grand River basin, sand dune and drumlin districts, mountains, quarries, and mines of the Upper Peninsula, returning to East Lansing by Lake Huron shore. They travel by truck, cook their meals, and sleep under the stars as part of a two week college field experience required for graduation.
Houghton Michigan students in metallurgy at Michigan College of Mining and Technology will tour Canadian mining districts this summer. Led by Prof A T Sweet the trip departs in late June for 2000 miles over two weeks visiting blast furnaces at the Canadian Sea Nose soldering smelters at Sudbury and other districts including Cobalt Kirkland Lake Timmins and Noranda.
