Farmer Nearly Fatal Self Inflicted Gun Wound
Peter Schifken, a farmer living about one mile east of the city, attempted suicide early Monday morning after heavy drinking. He placed a gun under his chin and pulled the trigger with his toe, shattering the jaw and blowing away part of his face. Wounds also severed two gages on his left hand. Dr Whiteside treated the severe injuries, but recovery is doubtful and disfigurement is likely if he survives. No clear motive beyond intoxication.

Dr Nevin Passes. Noted Ironwood Physician Dies
The Gogebic range mourns Dr. Nevin a popular Ironwood physician born in Scotland April 27, 1855. He came to Rush Medical College then Ironwood in 1887, served on the county board, and led Masonic and Knight Templar lodges. Survived by widow and son John M. Nevin of the University of Michigan.
