Congressman Frank E. Hook said in Washington that federal investigator John McEwen would recommend the removal of two Upper Peninsula relief officials, Walter M. Berry and K L Sawyer, after an investigation Hook requested. McEwen reportedly indicated an adverse report on Herman W. Rahn and questioned a $48,000 Ishpeming playground cost as potentially illegal, with findings to be sent to the FERA legal division and a broader relief cleanup anticipated. Aubrey Williams said Howard Hunter would review Michigan conditions and report to Washington.

At the Bessemer Business Men's Association meeting plans were made to end evening gatherings for the summer and hold one noon session monthly starting in June. The annual officer election is set for May 20 at noon. H Connors of Hurley High spoke on Liberty versus Equality, with songs by Ironwood Legion and readings by John W. Johnson and Arthur G. Johnson. Planting trees in Bessemer was endorsed as a civic project and support from the city council was sought. A Michigan centennial program was also discussed.

Mines to close as strike looms in Upper Michigan region
Anticipating a strike set for next Monday May 13 Gogebic range mines report suspension of operations with about 385 workers affected at the Ironton mine in Bessemer and nearby notices at Eureka mine Ramsay and other sites. Union leaders say a 7 hour day a 50 percent wage increase and union recognition are demanded while voting results from several locals favor a strike. A peaceful picket line is planned and arbitration is sought. The Fraternal Order of Eagles sponsor a Mother s Day program in Ironwood on May 12 with Ironwood High School band selections and multiple speakers and musical numbers. Local Eagles to meet at the Eagles hall at 1 pm Sunday.

Mrs. Eleanore Bielecki, longtime Bessemer resident born in Posen Germany, died Monday at Grand View Hospital aged 80. Survived by five sons, seven daughters, 29 grandchildren, four great grandchildren. funeral at St. Sebastian Church with Rev. C. J. Swoboda officiating. Interment Hillcrest Cemetery. The Children's Fund of Michigan provided a public health nurse Miss Betty Hurt and a dentist Dr J O Staughton to Gogebic County from May 1 1934 to May 1 1935. Hurt logged 1531 home visits and 193 school visits with 15 children inspected. 320 medical exams by local physicians, 596 skin tests and 282 X rays for tuberculosis. 49 children received services from Northern Michigan Children's Clinic. Nursing supervision covered 23 prenatal cases. Infants 323 preschoolers 12 crippled children aided. Staughton served 728 patients in 13 weeks of summer with 77 clinic visits yielding 936 teeth extracted and 1261 fillings.

Drive 68 New Trucks Through Town
Sixty eight motor trucks were driven through Bessemer early last Friday for use in the Ottawa national forest. They had been shipped by boat to Duluth and then driven through here on the way to ranger stations at Watersmeet Kenton Iron River and other points. Body of Woodsman Found Near Marenisco
The body of Felix Warren a 45 year old woodsman was found in the Presque Isle river near Marenisco last Friday afternoon. He had been missing a week and suffered epilepsy an attack which may have caused his fall into the river. He had no known relatives.

City Council votes to oust stagger system
The city council, by a 6 to 4 vote, abolishes the stagger system for police work. Mayor Henry T. James keeps five full time officers and appoints James Piper as police chief at $110 monthly.
