Death of John P Backon. longtime Bessemer resident

John P. Backon, a respected Bessemer contractor and carpenter born in Norway in 1859, died at his East Sellar street home at 10:40 p.m. on the third of the month from typhoid pneumonia after a brief illness. A Republican, he served as constable deputy sheriff and city police, and represented Ward 1 on the council after moving to the area in 1895. He leaves Mary H. Hagen, six children, and a devoted family. The Scandinavian Society and A O U W Lodge attended the funeral, with services at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at home and graveside rites. The community thanks many friends and his physicians and ministers for support during his illness.

First Inter Scholiastic Meet Held at Ishpeming

The Upper Peninsula Inter Scholiastic Athletic Association plans its inaugural meet in Ishpeming on Saturday May 24 with rules for scoring events and relays, entry limits, and eligibility. Crowded Opera House Welcomes Barlow Minstrels Show

A large audience at the opera house Monday night praised Barlow's Minstrels Coburn and Baldwin proprietors with universal satisfaction. The end men jokes were rusty but the specialties were first class notably the Indian club and barrel jumping acts.

This week a group organized as the Four-Leaf Social Club to hold roller skating and dancing parties at the opera house. Elected officers include President Lou Guyer Vice President John Davey Secretary Andrew Anderson Treasurer Byron Rice with directors Millard A Reid Jason C Jones Will Sincock and Will Otto and floor committee L Misener Roy Zeh Steve Harrington. The first skating party is tonight Saturday. Also advertising a Madison Medicine Co product Rocky Mountain Tea at 35 cents per bottle.
