At a Our Lady of Guadaloupe circle meeting the Daughters of Isabella learned of the invitation to attend the Immaculate Conception circle of Wakefield on May 16 for third degree initiation with state officers officiating. Members were urged to reserve for a banquet by May 12 and the group authorized a donation to the American Cancer Society fund. Prizes were awarded to Mrs. Dorothy Czajkowski and Mrs. Caroline Thomasini during the session.

Raymond Mattson Receives U of I Industrial Fellowship
Raymond H. Mattson of this city is among 18 recipients of industrial fellowships for advanced study at the University of Illinois. He won the Eastman Kodak Fellowship in chemistry as part of the U of I awards, totaling 171 graduate fellowships and scholarships funded by 145000 dollars from the University Board of Trustees. The announcement also includes two post doctoral fellowships of 2400 dollars and a main resident special fellowship of 1500 dollars. Graduate awards aim to spur independent research and broad knowledge across related fields. A mother daughter tea will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 PM at the Elks clubrooms by the Seghters of Isabella.

The
Ramsay Pioneer John Erickson Dies After Illness
John Erickson 1 a Ramsay resident and early pioneer died Tuesday night at Wakefield hospital after a two week illness. Born October 28 1866 in Orebro Sweden he came to the United States as a youth living in Ashland before moving to Ramsay about fifty years ago with his wife Maria Johnson. He worked in underground mining at Mikado mine and led Castile mine as foreman for sixteen years. After retiring in 1931 he farmed small scale and served as highway commissioner of Bessemer township. He was active in Sharon Lutheran church Runeberg lodge and is survived by his widow a daughter Mrs Herman Erickson and a grandchild all of Ramsay.

A total of $129,998.75, Gogebic county's share of the weight tax for the first quarter of 1948, was received from the auditor general's department by Louis Filippini, county treasurer, and handed to the county road commission. Of this amount $43,010.09 was distributed to the county's cities on a per capita basis, including Ironwood $43,010.09, Bessemer $27,329.64, and Wakefield $7,340.37.
