Honors Awarded At Bessemer High School Banquet
Bessemer high school honored the senior class at the Washington school gym on Wednesday night. Victor Fink was named valedictorian and Arthur Hansen salutatorian for 1938. The top ten included David Ryan Lorraine Scavarda Anna Marie Turkal and Dottie Chisholm among others. Second ten featured Elvi Hyvonen Elizabeth Hayes Catherine Cech Margaret Nelson Lynn Pihjala and more. Letters in athletics and activities were awarded by Supt BH J Oas with coaches and faculty speaking. David Ryan served as toastmaster.

Fall Fatal to Sping Lonson at Bessemer Home
George Bernhardt Lonson known as Ben Sping Lonson died after a fall at his east Longyear street residence in Bessemer. He was born February 20, 1896 in Thief River Falls Minnesota, served in World War I, played clarinet in Rex Theatre orchestra, and opened Sping's Chicken Shack before his death. He leaves a widow, mother, a foster, three sisters and two brothers. Services were held at the Rand home and Presbyterian church with Rev. W L Peterson officiating. American Legion provided military honors.

Calvin Holland Dies Suddenly in Oakland
Word was received of the sudden death Monday in Oakland California of Calvin Holer a resident of Bessemer. He leaves a son Jack. Calvin graduated from Bessemer high school in 1916. He married Della Chart on June 23 1923 and was son of Mr and Mrs Jerry. He and his family lived in Flint.

Colby man struck by car injures on old county road
Joseph Vukalich of Colby was hit by a car Tuesday night near the old Colby office on the old county road. He suffered a broken leg and arm and other injuries. Maurice Geary of nearby area was the driver and the cat was taken to Grand View hospital.

Legion Plans Memorial Day and Military Ball in Bessemer
The Bessemer American Legion post schedules a Memorial Day observance on May 30 and its seventh annual Military Ball on June 3. The Memorial program committee is Maurice Abelman chairman with Joseph Jerek Paul Becker August Dahl and Victor Carli. The township post will cooperate. Gray Gordon's band will perform at the ball with James Carpenter chairing the dance committee.

Tax Commission Hearing Set for May 25 in Bessemer
The Michigan tax commission will hold its annual hearing at the courthouse in Bessemer on Wednesday May 25 to discuss mining valuations. Youthful chairman John N Fegan of Sault Ste Marie will preside at his first local hearing. A severance tax on minerals mined is proposed to replace current property taxes and will require state legislature action.

Range Responds 100 Percent for Air Mail Week
Gogebic county communities report full participation with donations for Air Mail Week observed May 15 to 21. Es Camilli, city chairman, notes one air mail pilot will pick up at the county airport. Bessemer Ramsay and Wakefield each contributed $15, Ironwood sent its $15 to headquarters, and the Bessemer Ideas Club donated $9.50 for a special rubber stamp for local air mail use.

Swedish groups in the Gogebic range briefed on tercentenary events for the first Swedish settlement in the Delaware valley in 1638. The James W. Toumey nursery at Watersmeet hums with spring activity as young trees are lifted, sorted, and allocated for planting. Large specimens go to the forest, smaller ones stay in nursery. roots are kept moist in sphagnum moss and cold storage to prevent damage. The Watersmeet nursery produces about ten million trees annually, enough for half a township, with Ottawa Forest planning to plant around 3 500 acres this spring and crews to erect snow fences along roadsides.
