In Bow past, three candidates vie for the office of mayor. Liberty ticket fields Bernard L. Maz while Shaw spring faces a challenge. DeStasio and others seek supervisor and alderman roles across wards with multiple slates and candidates named for ward positions.
The Ironwood Red Devils enter the regional and Class B teams move to Bessemer as host. For the first time in years the regional winner advances to the state tournament.
John Marcus a 54 year old Bease resident died at Olson home on West Longyear street shortly after arriving for a visit with friends. Born in Finland on June 29 1893 he came to the United States in 1913 settling in Hancock to work in iron ore mines. He moved to Ironwood in 1919 then Bessem er to reside and worked in several mines. At his death he lived at the Saari home on First avenue.
At Sharon Lutheran Church annual meeting, John Bergman was reelected congregational secretary. Axel Coleman and August Nylund continued as trustees with Richard Korpela and Leonard Person added as new trustees. Deacons Edward Anderson and Oscar Faline were reelected for three years. Auditors are Mrs. Richard Korpela and Ima and Elsie Hellman. janitor Adolph Berger. Sunday School superintendent is Mrs. Arvo Rintala with assistant Mrs. Maurits Gustafson. Oscar Faline is Rock Island, DL’s contact. John Cartson is the alternate.
Hurley faces no bid responses for the garbage removal contract and may have the street department assume the task. Public Works Commissioner Gordon Paynter says a new dump truck is needed and cites worker shortages as the reason bidders stayed away.
The piece recalls Michigan and Stanford inaugurating the Tournament of Roses in Pasadena on January 1, 1902, later known as the Rose Bowl since 1923. It recalls Michigan’s 49–0 win, Willie Heston’s speed and power, Yost’s coaching lineage, and the enduring East-West Rose Bowl rivalry through the early history of the game.
Miss Marjorie daughter of Mr and Mrs Becken became the bride of Henry Shave son of Mrs Bessemer at a St Paul church on a Saturday in December. The bride wore forest green velvet and carried red poinsettias with her sister Lydon as matron of honor. The ceremony was followed by a reception at the Ha rauquier Ave home and the couple planned to reside in Norfolk Virginia.
Private First Class Roland, son of Mr and Mrs West Iron Street, is now serving with forces in Japan. Nothing else readable confirms unit or date.
Verner England 45 of Flint Michigan died Monday December 23 following brief illness. He was born May 1902 in Bessemer and attended public schools here. Survived by wife Marie England and children Jacqueline Hurley Beth Raymond Flint and Patricia now Mrs Kocenya of Flint. sister Mrs Charles Gleason Pontiac and brother Elmer of Maxzoo. Funeral Saturday at 3 from family residence 408 South Street with Rev F B man officiating. Burial Forest Cemetery. Pallbearers George Jesek William Faah Olson Guat Nylund Albagt Maki. Out of town relatives attended.
