Local Essay Winners Named in Gogebic Tuberculosis Contest
The Gogebic County Anti Tuberculosis Association sponsored an essay contest in Bessemer schools directed by Mrs. Fannie Johnson with help from the English departments and the American Legion Auxiliary. Older Ishpeming residents recall disputes about the death of Mrs. Albert E Stearne wife of a former Marquette county schools commissioner. She died in an auto accident at Compton California on February 19. Her husband had died in Detroit two years earlier and several relatives were injured in the crash including her son in law Dr William Empie and her brother in law Walter Stearne. A passenger Gertrude Salter suffered a skull fracture and was not expected to live.

Vomastek Rites Held On Monday
Funeral services for Charles J. Vomastek 38 died at Hines Memorial Hospital Chicago were held Monday at St Sebastian Catholic Church. Burial followed at Hillrest cemetery with pallbearers from the Bessemer Legion post and honorary pallbearers from Escanaba Daily Press staff. Out of town relatives came from Escanaba Kenosha Rib Lake and nearby communities.

Boy Shotself in Accident at Home Leaves in Serious Condition
Joe Succa, 14, was seriously wounded by an accidental discharge of a 42 caliber pistol at his home Monday evening. He was rushed to Grand View hospital in critical condition with the bullet grazing the stomach and passing through his body damaging intestines. The incident left the Ramsay junior high student in a precarious state.

Mrs. Berntine Bjork Passes After Illness
Mrs. Berntine Bjork died Tuesday evening at age 80 at her Puritan home after a cancer illness. Born in Norway January 3 1853 she migrated in 1896 and lived here 33 years mostly in Iron Belt and Puritan. The mock inauguration at the new Gogebic high school gym last Saturday drew hundreds. The event sponsored by the Bessemer Business Men's Association sold out seats and featured Supt. C. R. Cobb impersonating Chief Justice Hughes administering the oath to President Roosevelt, read by W. F. Pellew. A parade of color bearers officials Legion R O T C and the high school band preceded the ceremonies.
