Political Picture In Washington On Bennett Potato Shortage
In Washington last week sweet potatoes sold at about 12 cents apiece while white potatoes vanished except for door to door black market peddling. Next week, or soon after, new potatoes were expected in plentiful supply as government price supports ended in 1950. The piece argues bureaucratic mismanagement caused the shortage, tracing subsidies from 1940s to parity in 1951 and noting acreage cuts and price declines after reform.
