Farmers Adopt More Fertilizers and Lime For Soil Health
Local farmers under the Soil Conservation program are using commercial fertilizers this spring as 81 tons of 20 percent superphosphate and 20 tons of 48 percent superphosphate have been ordered. A 20 ton car of 48 percent superphosphate is on the farms. Under the AAA plan the fertilizer cost can be deducted from soil benefit payments. Lime is emphasized to neutralize acidity on local soils, aiding alfalfa and legumes. Lime recipients include Wakefield and Ironwood area farmers with listed cubic yard applications totaling 130 cubic yards. University of Michigan reports over 5,000 students expected for the 48th summer session starting June 30.
