Ore shipments set record in May and season to June
The Great Lakes iron ore fleet set a May and season record with 11,031,199 gross tons shipped from Lake Superior mines in May, surpassing the prior peak. Through June 1, 1941, total shipments reached 15,035,992 gross tons, aiding the goal of 75,000,000 tons for the season. Weather and fewer coal cargoes helped explain May’s rate. Canadian boats may join the traffic as legislation and president approval allow cross- port ore movement, with 16 boats expected to haul Lake Superior ore.
