Corrigan Comments on Ore Moves and Growth

James Corrigan of Corrigan McKinney & Co. in Cleveland discusses iron ore shipments in the Lake Superior region. He cites a July 1 record of about 5 million tons, expects rates to hold, notes the Jordan mine on the Mesaba and aims for 2.5 million tons this year, and explains moving headquarters to Cleveland to simplify reporting. He also mentions a new opera house plan in Menominee and a coal strike impacting supply.

Conductor Shot By Tramps on C. and N.W. Line

Conductor H. T. Young of the Chicago and North Western was shot in the head while trying to board a train at Rhinelander. He died instantly. A posse pursued the gang, two hoboes were wounded in a Sunday running fight, and one suspect named O'Donnell surrendered with a shattered arm. He was taken to Rhinelander for custody.

Ore Shipments Rise Sharply From Upper Lakes Ports

A look at ore shipped from upper lake ports in June and July 1901 and 1902 shows a large increase in 1902 with conservative year totals around 23 million tons and some estimates as high as 25 million. June 1901 shipments were 3 373 833 gross tons, June 1902 3 751 595 tons, up 377 863. July 1901 shipments 4 963 608 tons, July 1902 8 936 833 tons, up 3 936 225.

Ashland mine commissions new steel shaft and gear

The Ashland mine completed the new steel shaft on July 1 and tested the machinery in good working order. Hoisting operates moderately while a larger double deck cage and two boilers are being installed, with superintendent Ellard pleased by the rapid progress and improved ore hoisting capability.

Maine weather boosts farming as rain lags high ground crops

The week sees favorable weather for farm work but potatoes on high ground suffer from insufficient rain. A Finn named John Kuitter was killed instantly by a switch engine at the Aurora mine Thursday night. Walter Truettner returns from the Mesaba range where he managed banking for Mr. Sellwood. A Milwaukee to Appleton Pullman route begins July 11 with daily departures and arrivals to Milwaukee by 8:50 am. The first McKinley postal cards will be issued early next month with strong demand and premier typographical design featuring the late president’s profile.

Public park swings destroyed amid cussedness claim

The Improvement Association installed two four seat wooden swings at the fair grounds park for public use but they were broken within two days. The Iron Wood Times notes it as proof of widespread non tax paying indifference toward preserving public property and urges guardianship to protect park assets.
