Well Known South Bessemerite Erickson Dies in Chicago

Anif Alied Ryichson well known South Bessemer farmer died yesterday morning in Chicago while visiting his daughters. Born in Wasa Finland on March 28 1875 he came to the United States in 1893. He moved to a South Bessemer farm in 1906 and his wife died in 1936. He was a charter member of the local Runeberg lodge and received life membership certificates on its 40th anniversary. Surviving are three children Edwin John Ray Walker and several daughters. Funeral services were held Monday evening with burial in Hillrest cemetery.

Single license urged for U P liquor vendors

Upper Peninsula Retail Liquor Vendors association endorsed a plan for a single license to sell beer wine and liquor by glass and bottle at its Iron River meeting. They backed Gov Fitzgeralds aim to end state stores and tax changes and appointed a three member committee to confer with the governor. Officers re elected Leonard Murray president Bingo Ferzaccé vice president Allan Gillis secretary treasurer Murray Ferzacca and Robert Taylor were named to visit Lansing.

Primary filing closes in Bessemer with 18 Citizens slate

The last filing date for the Bessemer primary on Tuesday January 31 sees 18 candidates on the Citizens ticket. Names include Mayor Hugo L Hill Clerk Walter E Maki Treasurer Louis Filippini and several ward and supervisor candidates. Gogebic County school board group met in Ramsay with MEA field rep Wesley Thomas and state school board president C H Runciman discussing school aid.

County Reclaims Miner's Castle Land Deeded in 1931

Munising twenty seven acres at Pictured Rocks west end including Miner's Castle rock, deeded to the state by Alger County in 1931, is again the county's property. With federal funds now potentially available for park development, the county arranged to obtain the land from the state.

Alec Burt 56 Dies Suddenly in Bessemer

Alec Burt a longtime Bessemer resident died suddenly at 2 45 PM Saturday at Grand View hospital after a four day illness from heart trouble. Born May 27 1882 in Ashton Michigan he came to the Gogebic range in 1885 with his parents. He worked as a drayman in early days and for ten years with the Gogebic county road commission. A veteran Bessemer fireman, he served over 30 years. Survived by widow and eight children Wayne Jack Lawrence Robert William Loris Betty all of Bessemer. mother Mrs John Burt. two sisters and four brothers. Funeral services Tuesday at home conducted by Rev W L Peterson with active pallbearers from the fire department. Honorary pallbearers were road commission fellow employees.

Army Reserve Posts Now Open for Enlistment

Special opportunities for enlistment in the regular army reserve are offered to eligible men under 26 who served honorably in the regular army for at least one year. Reenlistment grants an annual allowance of 24 dollars. active-duty pay under law applies if activated. Tax valuation of mines back on old basis

The Michigan state tax commission will revert to using conservation department surveys to assess Upper Peninsula mining properties, ending a WPA based re appraisal era. Pardee and Eddy of the conservation department will inspect copper and iron mines this month and next, resuming pre WPA procedures. Alvin E Richards of Marquette is reappointed to the state tax commission as secretary.

Puritan Mine Reports Year’s First Fatality

The Puritan mine recorded 1939s first fatal accident Monday night near 9.00 when Isaac V Makela age 50 was killed by falling ore. Makela a Finland immigrant living in Ironwood leaves a wife two sons one daughter and two brothers. Funeral held Saturday in Ironwood.

Funeral services for Miss Mary Contratto were held last Friday morning at St Sebastian Catholic church. Rev C J Swoboda officiated. The pallbearers were six cousins John Peter Albert Bruno George Ballone and Charles Enrico.

Mrs Frances Hobeny Buried Yesterday in Bessemer

Frances Hobeny a longtime Bessemer resident aged 89 died Friday at county infirmary hospital after living in Muskegon and Manistee earlier in life. Born February 15 1849 in Kronay Bohemia she immigrated in 1876 and had 11 children with three survivors Joseph Edensburgh Washington Peter Des Moines and Kate. Funeral services were held at Frick funeral home officiated by Rev E H Kanning. The piece notes the iron steamship Michigan built Erie 1844 later reconditioned 1905 and struck from navy list 1927 after 85 years service.

Road Agency Seeks 31338 To Cover Debts

Crystal Falls Iron County road commission reports a $31,838 shortfall to clear outstanding bills. Engineer-manager Harry Wills told the board of supervisors that paying the debts would let the commission operate rest of the year, though the county itself faces red ink with no relief in sight.

Final return to Gogebic County 1938 highway revenues

Lansing reports the closing of highway revenue accounts for 1938 with Counties and Cities. Highway Commissioner Murray D. Van Wagoner delivered gasoline tax vouchers to Auditor General Vernon J. Brown for the year’s last half and weight tax payments for the final quarter amounting to 1 275 000 and 424 324 94 respectively. Counties and Cities received 25 427 005 from highway revenues for 1938, compared with 26 152 702 last year. UP counties totals included.

Gogebic County lands big U P road bids in expanded plan

Murray D. Van Wagoner prepares to award 41 construction contracts totaling 8.86 million dollars, including 285 miles of road improvements and eight bridges. PWA funded projects account for 30 jobs, with 45 percent federal backing, letting on a record bid spread. Gogebic and surrounding counties receive several contracts including US 2 and M 28 segments.

Health Co Op Discussed On Gogebic Range Meeting

Rev Joseph Gondek led a first organizational meeting at the home of August Aho Ironwood last week with representatives from Ironwood Wakefield Hurley Saxon and Bessemer. They debated cooperative health services and the differences from state medicine and planned an April mass meeting with invited speakers to explain cooperative medicine in practice. The group saw potential wide community impact and future events. Rev Gondek also spoke on Christian economic cooperation during Mass at the Anvil location.

Funeral Monday for Local Restaurant Operator Nick Voornas

Nick Voornas, a local restaurant operator, died Friday and was buried Monday morning. Rev. W. L. Peterson conducted the rites at Frick funeral home. Voornas, born in Greece 51 years ago, leaves a brother in North Dakota and a cousin Constantine Voornas in Watersmeet. In other notes, regional Social Security lump sums averaged $59.38 in December, a record high since benefits began in 1937.
