Youngstown Mines Corporation served notice to the city council asserting that contracts or obligations beyond electors’ authorization or exceeding the legal debt limit cannot be entered. The move follows a $16,000 tax levy to cover an old light and power bill. Officials were asked for a financial statement as of January 1.
Three students Fleming Baraboo Percy Rosemargy and James Gilboy were placed on six month probation plus one year for one student. They admitted hiding newspapers under a Lake Mendota boat dock to protest campus articles. Dean Goodnight condemned the prank and betrayal of public trust.
Word has been received of the death last Friday in Jersey City New Jersey of Michael Tekela former resident of Bessemer. He was born in this city 48 years ago and left for Jersey City 14 years ago. Survivors are two daughters Shhe and Grace and the following brothers and sisters Louis and Mrs Ent Loncharge of Bessemer Les and Mrs Thomas Belanger Central George of Wakefield and Frank Mager of Ironwood.

Mrs. Mary Zorziski died Tuesday night at 9 30 in the county infirmary hospital at age 52 after a week’s confinement. She had lived here three years after moving from Ironwood and is survived by a daughter Mrs Anton Bielecki and a stepson Max Soyka of Bessemer. Funeral services were held at Nyberg funeral home Ironwood with Rev A G Eklund officiating and burial followed in Ironwood.
George L. Mazanec will handle the sale of automobile license plates in Bessemer and vicinity, with office in the former Peoples State Bank building. Appointed by Harry F. Kelly, secretary of state. Gedda led the office the past two years under Case, succeeding Duda.
The federal government issued 1044.45 to Gogebic County as 1938 payment for the Ironwood Home steads project. Homesteads are tax exempt yet the payment equals taxes, and the sum reflects a government disbursement to the county for housing land.
Gogebic county association of school superintendents and board members unanimously backed the immediate adoption of a deficiency bill to provide 4 1/2 million dollars to Michigan school districts. They urged passage of a state aid bill for junior colleges and discussed proposed school legislation as they support MEA programs.
Funeral services for the late John Carpenedo were held last Friday at St. Sebastian church with Rev. C. J. Swobda presiding. Pallbearers included John Guzzo Anton Gheller Arnold Eappolite Frank Gheller and Charles Montesi of Bessemer. Last rites for Mrs August Cabiança took place Saturday at Sebastian's with Rev. Swoboda officiating. Casketbearers were John Menara Arnold Eppolite John Guzzo Anton Gheller Faustino Giarola and Anton Rigoni.
Miss Mary Contratto died Wednesday morning just before 2 o clock at Grand View hospital after a lingering illness. She was 25, a life resident born in Bessemer on December 11, 1915. Survived by her mother Mrs Emma Contratto and four brothers Peter Paul Andrew of this city and John of Scenic Washington. Funeral held Friday morning at St Sebastian church. Also mentions University of Michigan botanical garden greenhouse uses and Vulcan mining town named for the Greek god.
The president's birthday ball for Bessemer city and township will be at Ramsay town hall on Saturday evening January 28. Proceeds fund the national campaign to combat infantile paralysis. fifty percent stays in Gogebic county, the rest goes to the Warm Springs Foundation. Local and township committees, led by Supervisor Leonard Carlson, oversee the event and the sale of March of Dimes buttons. The drive is well organized and expected to be most successful ever.

Nick Voornas proprietor of the Eagle cafe in Bessemer for several years died this morning shortly after eleven o'clock. He had suffered a leg ailment that spread through his body and caused his death, and he reportedly refused amputation.
Lansing Morley RE Osborne of Howell presented results from a 183-school questionnaire on rural tuition and pupil transportation funding. Most responses favored paying tuition and transport from state aid, while critics denounced his pamphlet and timing of inviting gubernatorial candidates.
County Auditor Victor Lemmer resigned at the board meeting. Heimer of Ironwood, in office since 1931, will take a new post with Gogebic Industrial Bureau. Clare Haskins was named to Grand View hospital board, replacing the late Peters. An assistant was approved to update old abstracts for three months at 75 dollars monthly.
