Gogebic CWA project workers to receive first checks
Gogebic County CWA laborers will get first paychecks this Saturday covering December 1 through 7. About 2,634 men in Gogebic county are employed under the Civil Works Administration this period with 1,174 in Wakefield, 13 in Ironwood, 154 in Bessemer area and other townships. Payments will continue weekly each Saturday for at least three months as projects diversify.

Legion Posts Win Community Service Citations in UP
Nine American Legion posts in the Upper Peninsula were awarded the community service citation by the National Americanization Committee. The towns cited include River, Bessemer, Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Ishpeming, Chaming, Fomar, Gladstone and Wakefield. The awards were announced at the Michigan department’s state mid winter conference in Owosso and will be presented during annual inspections beginning January 1. A ceremony is planned for each post.

Semmerling Called by Death at 77 on Farm East of City
A. Semmerling, age 77, died at his farm home east of the city from heart ailment. Born July 5, 1856 near Danzig, he came to the U.S. as a youth, lived in Stevens Point and Chicago before settling in Bessemer. Survived by widow, two daughters and four sons. Funeral at 9 this morning from St. Joseph's lodge. Interment in Hillcrest cemetery. He was a progressive Gogebic County farmer, known for russet potatoes and a historic carload sod potato shipment to Pennsylvania. His farm, 12 1/2 acres, was a local model.

Pulpwood Boom Across Gogebic Region with Northwest shipments
A large volume of pulpwood is being cut in Gogebic and neighboring counties. Most is shipped via the Northwestern railway, with much going to Escanaba Paper and mills in Wisconsin. The Bonifas Lumber company, operating mills at Marenisco and Winegar, leads as top producer and buyer. Contract prices run about seven dollars per cord for spruce and five dollars for balsam and other woods.

Funeral services for Emma Brown who died last week were held Saturday afternoon from the family home and Sharon Lutheran church with Rev F E W Eastman officiating. Interment followed in Hillrest cemetery with pallbearers C L Solberg Alfred Johnson William Hellman Julius Velin Alfred Wigg and Gust Carlson. Arcturus the distant star that opened the World’s Fair in June also sent a beam to close it in November.

Mrs. Stanley Rummage, 45, longtime Ramsay resident, died suddenly at 9:30 am after a brief illness. Born in Manitowoc, Wis., she moved to Ramsay at age 10 and was married to a local man. Survived by husband, sister in California, and brothers in Baton Rouge, Vancouver, and Ashland. funeral plans pending. she was a member of the Bessemer Ladies Order of Foresters.

The emergency welfare relief commission will not assume responsibility for arrangements between county merchants and Civil Works Administration employees. Under federal rules the commission will not accept assignments on CWA payroll checks as done with work relief payrolls. Each merchant is responsible for any arrangements with CWA workers. Federal checks are not subject to garnishment.

Bessemer Township Loses Road Test Case
The 1931 McNitt law allowing gradual absorption of township roads into county systems was declared constitutional by the supreme court last week. Gogebic county townships Erwin Bessemer and Wakefield sought to restrain the road commission claiming faulty title and home rule violation. The court denied their petition upholding the act which provides for absorbing 20 percent of township roads each year.

Death of Mrs Emma Jacobson in Chicago
Word arrived of the death of Mrs Emma Jacobson in Chicago last Saturday. A former Bessemer resident, she was 71, born June 25, 1862 in Metata Sweden. She moved to the United States with her husband after marriage and lived in Bessemer from 1855 until 1924 when she relocated to Chicago. She and Mr Jacobsen had 15 children, eight surviving: Mrs E Halvorsen of Homewood IL, Mrs Joseph Forss, Mrs Clarence Henneberg, Mrs Arthur Whitaker, Peter and Julius Jacobson and Gustave and Albert Jacobson of Chicago and Bessemer. Funeral services were held in Chicago Tuesday, burial in Oak Park cemetery.

The State Emergency Welfare Commission and the Department of Public Instruction plan to employ Michigan certified teachers who qualify for work relief. Paid 12.50 dollars weekly for twenty five hours, with fifteen hours teaching and ten in preparation. Classes for unemployed adults in Bessemer include English History Mathematics Mechanical drawing and gym. Registration at the superintendent's office. classes need at least ten students. Also notes Boulder Dam cement and aggregate usage figures for a 30 day period.

City plans new city hall under CWA project in Bessemer
City officials and the CWA commission in Lansing approved erecting a new city hall on the former Washington school site at the south end of Main Street. Betonti received life imprisonment while Illminen was sentenced to four to seven years after a jury found Betonti guilty of fatally shooting and beating a Harley Storekeeper Abe Miller. Judge Risjord of Ashland imposed the life term. Irweaseed township farmer Ulminen pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the stabbing death of Ben Macinsky and drew four to seven years in prison.
