Judge George O Driscoll set a circuit court hearing for 9 30 Monday December 6 to show cause why a temporary restraining order should not stop Bessemer from building a municipal light plant with federal aid. Lake Superior District Power Co seeks the order. A similar federal suit exists. A PWA loan and grant of 187 500 was approved for the project. Edward Hillis of Wakefield won 32717 50 in a garage rent suit against Bedell Motor Sales. John J Searle of Ironwood earned 2800 for injuries from a car collision with Ironwood owners Gustave and Francis Rolfsman. Susie Mattson of Ironwood won 670 against M E Syrjala from an auto crash July 26 1937. Theresa Messiaen of Ironwood was granted a divorce from Edward Messiaen. A Gogebic County jury awarded 35277 to Mr and Mrs Arvo Hautala and 3000 to John Silanpaa of Bessemer in a joint trial over a Feb 2 1937 Iron County auto collision. The W D Cochran Freight Lines of Iron Mountain defended. Fred Oberst, a third ward election board member in Bessemer, had charges dropped. Oberst was convicted of evicting Clyde Whitburn by mailer for the Democratic party at the polling booth April 5. Whitburn now lives in Milwaukee. The Waisen was dropped at the request of Prosecuting Attorney Leonard J Me anman.

Veteran of War Dies in Danville Hospital
Samuel Glatczak, a World War I Navy veteran, died Tuesday at the Danville veteran’s hospital where he had been a patient for two years. Born in Poland fifty years ago, he was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Glatczak of Bessemer and had lived in Detroit. He leaves three sisters Mrs. Julia McCarthy and Mrs. John Holup of Bessemer and Mrs. Celia Poprawski of Detroit.

U P Bureau To Meet With State Hotel Men
The Upper Peninsula Development Bureau will hold its annual midwinter meeting in Marquette Friday and Saturday January 21 and 22 with headquarters at the Northland Hotel. The gathering is in conjunction with the Michigan Hotel Association winter meeting, first held next year north of the Straits of Mackinac. Michigan hotel men honor their president Leon A. Deglman of the Northland and Ojibway and vice president W S Woodfill of the Grand Hotel Mackinac Island as speakers will be exchanged between the groups over the two days.

Governor Names Fegan to State Tax Commission

Dr. John A. Ahlstrom a physician with thirty years on the Gogebic range died last Thursday afternoon in a Hurley tavern after a heart attack. He was 69. He formerly had a Iron Belt office but was not listed as practicing in Iron county in recent years. Funeral held in Hurley this week. He had no known relatives.

Four Range Mines Enter Four Day Week on Gogebic Iron Range
With the ore shipping season over four Gogebic range mines operate four days weekly. Republic Steel Corp operates Ironton and Pabst Aurora, while Pickands Mather Co runs Newport and Sunday Lake. Cary mine at Hurley closed for electrification and equipment installation as a shaft over 700 feet is planned. Eureka mine at Ramsay also to deepen shaft by 200 feet and a new dry is being built near the machine shops.

An accident occurred at 1:30 Saturday morning on US-2 near the infirmary road involving Dominic Novascone of Anvil Palms and Arthur Johnson of Ramsay. Passenger Miss Ann Suzik, 18, of Ironwood, suffered serious injuries including a severed roof of the mouth, lip cuts, and several lost teeth. Johnson stopped to aid a stalled motorist when his car slid, and Novascone, driving east, could not avoid the collision due to icy conditions.

Dewey Melanson Fatally Shot in Deer Season Hunting Accident
Andrew Melanson 46 a prominent Bessemer restaurant owner was instantly killed during a bear hunting return trip near Gogebic Station. A loaded .30-30 rifle discharged when a twig struck the trigger as the gun crossed a windfall. The tragedy occurred on the last day of deer season and prompted an inquest set for Thursday. Melanson born Ashland 1891 built a local dining business and leaves a widow and three daughters along with parents siblings and several in-laws. Funeral plans include services in Gogebic Station and Ashland.
