Wakefield mine ships final ore from open pit

The Wakefield mine loaded and shipped the final ore from its open pit on November 11. Future mining will be underground. pit equipment will be dismantled and salvaged. An electric shovel will move to the Plymouth mine before surface extraction.

Gogebic County Seeks Million Dollar WPA Road Project

Gogebic county road commission submits a $1 077 000 WPA style road program to federal officials. If approved it would supplement current work ending Jan 15. County share would include 361 000 cash with the remainder in equipment and services for highway repair and construction and park improvements.

Tire Damages Car and Garage. Fire Dept Responds

A tire damaged the Clement Mixin car and garage on Mine street prompting an early Monday morning Bessemer fire department response. Later that day chimney fire calls were reported at the Ted Hetherington residence on Yale location and at John Menera's home on Third Avenue.

Shakeup on Michigan tax commission eyed

Mel I McPherson a leading Michigan Republican is slated to become the state tax commission chair as Toler N Fegan plans to leave the post. Libeke and McPherson reached a compromise, with Benjamins accounting visit in December and a possible UP member to join the commission.

Sheriff School Held for New Michigan Sheriffs

East Lansing hosts a newly created sheriff and under sheriff training program in the police training school building at MSP headquarters. Tax official injured in UP Thanksgiving car crash

Floyd Benjamin, a state tax commission employee, was injured when his car went into a ditch near Wakefield during Thanksgiving evening. He was taken to Wakefield hospital for treatment. William Gasper and two women companions escaped injury.

UP potato shipments to larger markets near 1000 carloads

D L Clanahan of Marquette a crop specialist for Michigan State College says about 1000 carloads of potatoes will move from the Upper Peninsula to larger markets this season. He notes the volumes reflect growing demand and regional distribution patterns.

Mrs. Michael Hook Funeral Tuesday

Mrs. Michael Hook 62 mother of Congressman Frank E. Hook died Saturday at her home after two years of illness. Born in Houghton in 1876 she lived in Copper Country before moving to Wakefield Ramsay and finally Bessemer. Survived by husband six sons Frank Matt George Joseph Herman Lawrence. Funeral at St Sebastian's Bessemer conducted by Rev Swoboda with interment at Hillrest cemetery. Pallbearers named Theil Sands Todd Savitski Selik.

In Gogebic county, the 1938 Christmas seal sale supports anti tuberculosis work with four pictured men highlighted.
