Children from the Presbyterian Sunday School and friends traveled by a C and N W special train at 9:00 a m to Sunday Lake Wakefield. The day was fine and the excursionists enjoyed the picnic grounds on the north shore. They returned on the 4 04 p m regular train tired but happy and ready to go again.
Reverend John Erickson will leave Bessemer Presbyterian Church for Rice Lake Wisconsin today after six years of service. He wrote a church corner stone history and his unselfish devotion to parishioners left lasting ties beyond creed. The Ericksons leave with gratitude and best wishes for their future happiness and prosperity.
The fire ruins along Bennett street are cleared and rebuilding will start. Ashland Brewing and Schlitz Brewing plan brick buildings. Schutz company to build a fifty foot two story brick block on Frank Shephard and A B Gibbs lots. Ashland Brewery to rise on Gus Kiviemi lot, two stories, brick. Caristom to build party wall with Ashland Brewing and Poundstone Layman, material undecided brick or cement blocks. Sullivan likely cement blocks, all breweries brick. Meinep may use brick or cement. Sullivan Layman Meinen bought a team from E M Nichols for summer building work.
Wash D. editor Matt Kurikka of Helsingfors visits America to promote Finnish migration to Finland and back to farms. He cites government aid and Finns' faith in Helsinki to repatriate. recalls past success in British Columbia where about 300 Finns followed him. Also lists church services and events surrounding his visit.
The notice announces Methodist services with a class meeting scheduled for 9:30 in the morning. It identifies a church or congregation and specifies the time for the class meeting as part of the service schedule.
The will of S. M. Stevenson of Me nominee is opened in court. Valuation exceeds $1,000,000. One-third goes to the widow and the other two-thirds are divided equally among five daughters. No other bequests or mention of others aside from the executor. Estate to be held in trust for three years. Executors named are United States Senator Stephen son and the widow.
Tickets go on sale September 8 11 15 and 20 with a connection at St Ignace to a D C N Co steamer to Buffalo at 2.00 higher. Sleeping car and steam er reservations via ticket agent. Marinette Wis Aug 20 hunger flames chased Axel Johnson John and William Nordin and Charles Stone of East Marinette twenty one miles to Athelstone exhausted and unable to recount the ordeal.
Regular adjourned meeting of the council of Bessemer held Monday evening August 19 1907 with Mayor Holland presiding. Aldermen present Becker Chaney Opas Patr ite Gladzak Bluha Webb O'Brien. absent Johnson Guli metti. Minutes approved. Bonds of Kilbride for sidewalks and gutters accepted and filed. Payment order for 1500 to War Kilbride authorized. City Attorney instructed re Tobings case and Annie Touhey bill approved for payment. Meeting adjourned. City Clerk W L Guyer.
The Southern Oregonian praises the Fine Entertainment at the Emerick building during carnival week calling it the finest moving pictures seen in the city. 625 people attended Saturday afternoon, proving strong local interest and urging manager Wallen to return west in March. The piece also notes a shift toward durable cement sidewalks improving street appearance and property values.
The Northern Wisconsin Farmer's Association held a key Ashland meeting last week to advance immigration and colonization. M G McGeehan of Harley led the event with J M Cameron, chief clerk of the land office and state immigration board, in attendance to help push state efforts. Upper peninsula interests are urged to be included to promote colonization and utilize idle lands in the district.
J M Darrow secretary of the Rhinelander Ice Preserving Co claims a new preservative from paper mill waste will keep ice from melting. The coating, called De Nitro Celulose, is applied after dehydrat ion. A Milwaukee plant is planned with a machine to produce bricks and a giveaway at the state fair.
Skud Goldman Co of Wakefield announced prizes for nearest guesses on goods sold in the first seven days. Men's prizes go to John Pesala with a $12 suit, another $3.50 shoes, $3 hat, 50 cent ascot, plus more prizes. Sadie prizes include damask, shoes, gloves, waist, and neckwear awarded to several Wakefield and Verona residents.
Donald McDonald sold forty acres at Palatka Iron County to Mr Sawyer of Menominee for Stambaugh township. The tract near Baltic Fogarty and Caspian mines has been divided into lots, many sold, with a large hotel and homes built. The buyer plans to sell unsold lots and develop the town, potentially forming a new village. Deed price is $4,000 with contracts on already sold lots reserved.
A physician notes that large red noses, often linked to drinking, can also be caused by a disease. The remark questions whether any woman has exhibited such a nose, implying rarity or disbelief.
Three famous National League players Chis tie Mathewson Leon Ames and Frank Bowerman of the New York Giants will visit the North for two months of hunting and fishing in Upper Michigan and Wisconsin. They will stay with Dr. R. T. Farrand of Niagara, a former schoolmate of Bowerman, who has promised deer hunting and fine sport.
Government officials urge all citizens especially in the west and northwest to stockpile coal now to prevent a repeat of last winter when rural and small town residents faced severe fuel shortages. Thousands froze in their homes as rail lines froze and coal could not be delivered, despite frantic pleas for aid.
The annual King and Prise Shoot of the German Schuetzenverine, delayed by rain, took place last Sunday in the park north of the city. Crowds attended in fine weather as C. A. Berwald won King with 29, John Meyers second, Peter Becker third. Prize shooting saw Wm. Berwald first, E. R. Bayliss second, A. Ekman third, with a second-place tie between Bayliss and Ekman resolved in favor of Bayliss. The Schuetzenverine is Beesemer’s oldest society, celebrating its 19th annual picnic and prize event.
Last week heavy fires spread across the western end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula causing extensive timber loss. Logging camps and equipment were destroyed, several settlements faced danger, and towns required large volunteer crews to hold back flames. Berry pickers and locomotive sparks blamed for some blazes. a major fire threatened Crystal Falls and nearby Dunn and Tobin mine areas. Firefighting included laying a thousand feet of hose and long hours of water play to halt spread.
Bessemer defeated Park Falls 9 to 2 at Bessemer Ball Park last Sunday. Park Falls showed speed and strength but costly errors and a hard hit from Monte Morris aided the home team. Battery for Bessemer was Nemencheck and Pascoe. Park Falls pitchers were Morris and O Rourke.
Hurley defeated Ironwood 9 to 11 last Tuesday with Buck Nolden of Escanaba pitching for Hurley. Ironwood failed to hit his twisters as the series opened. The second game ended in a forfeit to Hurley after Ironwood quit in the fourth inning over an umpire dispute. Port Washington’s pitcher started for Hurley while Belfast worked for Ironwood. Ironwood had recent swings at Rhinelander, losing 2 to 1 then winning 9 to 2. Bessemer visits Ironwood, then Ironwood travels to Hurley, where Hurley beat Butternut 7 to 2 Sunday.
