Gary Port To Become Major Ore Receiver On Lake Michigan

Gary on Lake Michigan is set to become a leading ore port as the Indiana Steel Company plant nears full operation. By year end 1,000,000 tons of ore are expected, rising to 2,000,000 tons next year and about 5,000,000 tons annually at full capacity. Lake Erie ports will still serve most ore from Lake Superior mines, but Michigan ports will grow faster in the coming years, shifting trade and vessel demand toward Gary and reducing up cargoes in the region. The Pittsburgh Steamship line is likely to carry much of Gary’s ore, and the Indiana plant’s output could absorb roughly half of the Steel Trust fleet. The impact will unfold after next season, with noticeable shifts in tonnage at Lake Erie ports.

Gathering Their Cars

Railroad men warn of a coming car shortage as grain and lumber movement peaks. Major railways instruct freight chiefs to keep cars on their systems for quick access when urgent needs arise. An existing agreement governs car allocation among lines.

Railways Split Cars Charge Changes Across Systems

Railroads charge twenty five cents a day for using another line’s cars, down from fifty cents during stacktimes. Some lines loaned hundreds of cars, boosting revenue. As demand rises, the rate may return to fifty cents. Efforts urge use of own cars on each system, though interline borrowing remains common and necessary for reaching destinations.
