The Legion and Blatz finish the second half in a tie for first place in the city-town ship bowling league. A playoff match will decide the second half winner and determine the opponent for the first half champions in the teens championship. The Legion and Blatz led a tight two-team chase for top spot most weeks.
Gogebic county has 79 residents receiving state old age pensions, with total monthly payments of 31,262 averaging 15.85 dollars. Across the Upper Peninsula about 1,300 people receive pensions and 21,000 statewide. Applications on file total 56,000. Federal funding adjustments set February and March averages at 15.45 dollars per pension. The next three months' amounts depend on the quarterly federal appropriation.
Twenty Gogebic farmers attended a farm accounting meeting at the Gogebic agricultural office last Saturday. Twelve brought inventory sheets dated April 1. Clyde May of Michigan State College outlined the plan of procedure and the uses of a farm accounting system. Each farmer received a Farm Account book from the college. The college offers services to start the farmer and end-year summarizing and departmentalizing farm records.
Henry T. James is the third Bessemer mayor to serve at least five terms, following W. H. Knight and Michael A. Gedda. The city lists 19 men who have held the office, with Andy Byrne leading the tenure count at six terms. The record spans terms from 1890 through 1936, naming each mayor in sequence.
Major Howard Starret, state reemployment director, reports shortages in several trades across Michigan. The National Reemployment Service lists openings in linotype operation, auto body finishing, floor molding, wool pattern work, soldering, auto auto work, die and tool design, auto timing, wood model building, and first class auto mechanics. The Gogebic county Democratic convention will be held Saturday April 25 at the courthouse in Bessem er. Seven delegates will be elected to the state convention to meet in Grand Rapids May 20 and 21.
Mrs C A Lamoreaux stepmother of Martin Lamoreaux music supervisor in Bessemer schools died last Friday in Ashland after illness since returning from Florida earlier this month. Funeral held Saturday in Ashland. The article also notes the ringnecked pheasant as a relative of the wild turkey in Michigan upland hunting lore.
Funeral services for Mrs. Peter Adamczak were held Monday at St. Sebastian church for embolism death at 54. Rev. Swoboda led rites with six sons as pallbearers. Polish Rosary Society attended. She was born November 30, 1881 in Stevens Point and came to Bessemer 30 years ago. Survived by twelve children, nine grandchildren, a husband who died at Ironton mine five years earlier, and four brothers, with several relatives listed.

Spring drills may be delayed by field sogginess while returning stars Erickson Mikulich Scheela lead a reshaped lineup with new candidates joining from Fargo Richey and Moorhead.
Joseph Ochis reports the death of his mother Mrs. Ochis of Castelamonte Italy aged 87. She lived in Bessemer for thirty six years then returned to Italy thirteen years ago. She was born February 15 1849 in Victoria Italy. Surviving sons are Joseph Ochis of Bessemer and Peter Ochis of Flint Michigan.
Pickands, Mather & Co announces Plymouth mine at Wakefield will mine ore this season though starting date is not set. The Plymouth shipped its last ore in 1931 and in 1933 stripped waste material. The Plymouth property has the highest valuation for taxation purposes of any mine in the state.
The first annual Spring Hop will be held at the Irondrome on Saturday night, April 25, organized by the Bessemer Junior Women's Club. It aims to become a premier social event, matching events like the Military Ball and Easter Monday fire department ball. Patrons include George W. Korski and C E Anderson, Joseph W. Pecard, and Joseph J. Jezek, with senior club members assisting. Bill Riley’s Orchestra of Ironwood will provide music.
August Saari was elected chairman of the Bessemer township soil conservation act committee at the meeting held last week at the Harding school. Members include Dewey Bjork of Ramsay Kenneth Duncan J H Treb icock and H L Schieber of Wakefield. L E Dick of Montreal chairs the publication committee to promote technical papers by members.
A Michigan chemical plant reports its waste contaminant can be detected in water at one part per billion. The discovery notes the contaminant imparts a distinctive taste even at extremely low concentrations. No health impact details are provided in the report.
