Wallace to Allow Demonstrations If Court Rules
Governor George Wallace said Alabama will permit a Selma to Montgomery march if a federal court orders it, while warning that racial demonstrations must stop. He cited previous forceful measures against a 50 mile march and urged peaceful conduct if authorized by the courts. Wallace defended Alabama’s lower violence level and called for expansion of education to ease unrest. He criticized Martin Luther King Jr. and linked some associates to subversive groups, noting positions cited by the Justice Department and congressional committees.
