Negroes Chided for Refusal To Use Offered City Stadium
SELMA AL AP Sheriff James G Clark seized command of a city street and barred a march by about 500 ministers from across the nation who sought to hold a memorial service for slain clergyman Rev James J Reed. Clark said the march would disrupt voter registration and offered use of the municipal stadium which demonstrators turned down. Officials warned no mass marches would be permitted yet a solid line formed before deputies as clergymen and activists prepared to honor Reed. The episode echoed nationwide memorials as President Johnson prepared a voting rights address and Governor Wallace defended Alabama’s stance while court actions moved forward.
