Schweitzer to hold public hearing on Crystal area mill
Schweitzer indicated plans to schedule a public hearing on March 31 and a special town meeting on April 8 to consider extending industrial zoning in the Crystal area southward to a line 350 feet north of Brown Street. The proposed mill would be 200 by 500 feet, similar to Laurel Mill in Lee, with one four-drainer paper machine. It would produce no smoke or noise, be at least 300 yards from homes, be landscaped, use water from the Housatonic River, and return effluent meeting future stream requirements. The plant could later add a second machine, increasing employment from the current projected 73 positions drawn from the region. Existing Schweitzer mills are in Lee, Spotswood, Elizabeth, Mount Springs, Ancram, and Windom, Minnesota.
