Johnson urges speed rail system for East Coast corridor

President Johnson tells Congress of an imminent need for a high speed intercity rail network along the East Coast from Washington to Boston. He cites projected travel increases of 150 to 200 percent by 1980 and freight growth near doubling, proposing an initial $8 million for 24 self propelled cars from New York to Philadelphia and possibly Washington to Boston, with no firm start date yet. Rep. Bennett proposes making DC, Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa a new 51st state, suggesting a separate state that could include those territories.

Wilde at Riggs Delights in Stockbridge production

The Austin Riggs Players stage The Importance of Being Earnest at the Lavender Door in Stockbridge directed by Jayne Mooney. Ivan Miller as Algernon and Mary Fussell as Gwendolen lead strong performances with notable support from Bronwyn Pleiss, Peter Kipp, Lawrence Goodwin, and Cynthia Cantwell. Varied British accents affect cohesion, some Wilde witticisms miss, yet the show remains an enjoyable, period piece with sharp epigrams and lively stagecraft.
