Israelis landed on the Egyptian held Shadwan island at the Gulf of Suez. They sank two Egyptian torpedo boats and reported 15 Egyptian soldiers killed. Three Israeli soldiers were killed and six wounded. Eight Egyptian soldiers were captured as Israeli forces comb the island.
North Vietnamese and Viet Cong surged from the U Minh Forest in the Mekong Delta in a two hour assault on a South Vietnamese brigade post. At least 15 South Vietnamese marines were killed and 4 wounded while U.S. planes and artillery hit the attackers. Government claims 72 enemy were killed. 400 fighters involved. Separate weekly casualty totals show declines for all sides, with 84 Americans and 197 government troops killed in action. An ammunition explosion at an artillery base northeast of Saigon killed 18 Americans and wounded three.
Hanoi says it will not publish the names of American pilots held as prisoners. A Vietnamese diplomat told three American wives that captured pilots are not POWs and will be judged under Vietnamese law. The statement follows the U.S. request for the captives’ identities amid peace talks.
President Nixon pledges a major push to fight crime and pollution, boosting federal aid to local law enforcement and proposing a $10 billion water program to modernize waste treatment plants. He warned cuts threaten progress and outlined plans to offset costs with innovative financing for open spaces while delaying some programs to balance the 1971 budget.
