Viet Cong Launch Heavy Rocket Attack on Allies

Saigon reports the Viet Cong fired the heaviest rocket and mortar barrage in 44 months, shelling 51 allied bases and towns. U.S. commands say at least 127 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were killed across six clashes along Cambodia and Laos borders, with two American soldiers killed and 23 wounded. Casualties also include 16 South Vietnamese soldiers and 15 civilians wounded. American targets included Long Binh and Bien Hoa, plus divisions and brigade HQs. A later report adjusted enemy fatalities from 234 to 21 in one encounter. one helicopter crewman killed, eight Americans wounded. About 35 B52s conducted raids on the Ben Het area. A terrorist bomb exploded in a Saigon magic theater injuring no one, evacuating the billet area.

Iraqi Regime Foils Coup Plot Against Baath Authority

Baghdad announced that a coup attempt against the Revolutionary Command Council was crushed. The three man military court was formed to try arrested plotters described as deviationists and imperialist agents. The planned action targeted the 1968 Baath rise and involved Bakr loyalists. The radio implied Baathist opposition may have staged the bid.

Draft of U S Constitution Auctions at $160000

A notated second draft of the Constitution, printed Sept 12 1787, sold yesterday for 160000 at Parke-Bennet Galleries. One of nine survivors from a 60-copy printing, the four-leaf document measures 14 3 4 by 10 1 2 inches with Butler’s marginal notes. Carnegie Book Shop of New York won the prize amid a small bid. underbidders included Lew Feldman and Charles Sessler Inc.
