Gavin denies Kennedy offer for Army post

Ambridge Mass UPI Lt Gen James M Gavin says he has not been approached by President-elect Kennedy about any appointment to the defense team. Gavin, a former Army chief of research and development, retired in 1958 citing disagreement with defense policy under Eisenhower.

Pigs In Peril Spur Durand Stop And Jail

In Durand Wisconsin police stopped a driver after noticing a young man named Orville Easland 18 with a suspicious load. Police said the passengers were a load of pigs stolen from a local farmer. Easland was jailed as details unfold.

Legislators Clash With Federal Courts Over School Integration

In Baton Rouge Louisiana lawmakers denounced federal courts as tyrannical for rulings on New Orleans school integration. The House and Senate condemned federal actions, citing contempt rulings against Lt. Gov. Aycock House Speaker Jewell and Supt. Shelby Jackson. A deputy marshal sought to serve a contempt citation on Jewell as sergeants blocked access to the chamber. The session ended with a resolution denouncing federal authority and pledging to resist court orders in the segregation dispute.

Engineer Rides Stern of Tanker 27 Rescued

NORFOLK Va UPI A veteran seaman rode the stern of the shattered Pine Ridge 130 miles from land while 28 crewmen were rescued by Navy helicopters. John Richart Wilmington Del stayed aboard the stern section awaiting salvage as Capt Clark Snyder and seven others perished in the Cape Hatteras storm. Rescuer Drowned Seaman Paul Guetzow Chicago drowned after being swept overboard as USS Eaton escorted the disaster scene. Richart may join volunteers for salvage.

Hickey to Name Self to Wyoming U S Senate

Gov Joseph J Hickey the first Democrat to govern Wyoming in more than a decade said he will resign soon to serve in the U S Senate seat left by the death of Keith Thomson in Cody Thomson died of a heart attack on December 9 after his election to the seat now held by Democrat Joseph C O Mahoney Secretary of State Jack Gage will complete the governor's term for the remaining two years.

Perjury Admission in Boston Hearing Ties to Contract Fraud

In Boston AP report, former Thomas Worcester contracting firm comptroller Philip W. Murphy of Bridgewater admits he perjured himself before a grand jury and an IRS hearing. Judge Charles Wyzanski Jr. called it an open and shut case for jail after Murphy testified yesterday about a cash package tied to Frank Norton and a $275,000 payoff.

Polaris Target Perfect Missile Test Sets Record Distance

The Navy reports the submarine Robert E. Lee launched a Polaris missile from underwater near Cape Canaveral, traveling over 1268 miles and deemed target perfect. Missile timing cited as 1 34 p.m. CEST, with Vice Admiral Raborn confirming success.
