Liberia Wins A Seat on U N Council
Liberia won a United Nations Security Council seat after a compromise to split the two year term with Ireland. Portugal withdrew, allowing Ireland to become Western European candidate, with Liberia to start Jan 1 1961 and Ireland to replace Liberia Jan 1 1962. The 14th ballot produced Liberia 76 votes, Ireland 3, Portugal 2, Cyprus and Nigeria 1 each. The Soviets protested, calling the deal outside U N charter terms and warning of punishment for those responsible.
