U.N. Congo cost vote ends brisk 1960 session

The United Nations General Assembly approved a plan to share Congo operation costs totaling 48.5 million dollars with 46 voting for and 17 against amid abstentions. It also authorized up to 24 million dollars for early 1961 Congo efforts as the 15th session adjourned after a stormy three months.

Gloucester Businessman Kennedy's Senate Choice

17 Judges Swept Out From Cuban High Court

HAVANA Cuba UPI Fidel Castro launched a major judiciary purge firing 17 Supreme Court justices and giving the regime power to reorganize lower courts. Immunity from dismissal was suspended for 45 days as the tribunal shrank from 32 to 15. Francisco Alaban Trelles fled to Florida after opposing the motion.

Pocket Revolt Is Crushed By Venezuela

In Caracas a brief uprising aimed at freeing imprisoned officials of the deposed Perez Jimenez dictatorship was crushed by forces under President Romulo Betancourt. A rebel lieutenant led about 20 men, and one insurgent was wounded in a 50 minute gun battle before surrendering near the Aguaira post and the Caracas La Guaira highway on the way toward the capital. Official sources said the rebels hoped to reach Caracas prison housing former regime officials.

Three Men Found Guilty in Koza Killing Case

In Superior Court at noon three men were found guilty for roles in the October 1959 killing of Michael Koza. Dougherty and Kiley were convicted of second degree murder, Polcaro of being an accessory before the fact, with all three facing life terms and possible appeals to the state Supreme Judicial Court.

PBY Crew Lost Off Newfoundland

A U S Navy Neptune patrol bomber crashed into the sea off the southeast tip of Newfoundland with no survivors expected. Based at Argentia Newfoundland the P2Y normally carries five or six crew. The crash occurred about 17 miles northeast of Cape Race as rescue planes and ships rushed from Argentia.
