City Census Begins Early January for Pittsfield

Florence Mullaney announces Pittsfield will begin its annual census in January. Three census takers will canvass doors for three weeks to count residents and dogs, update voting lists, and aid School Department planning. Last year counted about 57 388 people and nearly 4 000 dogs.

Eau Claire Hires Meter Maids Against Opposition

Eau Claire Wisconsin City Council approved hiring meter maids despite objections from councilwoman Mrs. Bessie Lee who argued Eau Claire men already struggle to find jobs and should not face female competition.

Silver by Late Local Man In Museum Holiday Exhibit

A Berkshire Museum display features silver by Pittsfeld born silversmith Butler Bemment who died here in 1869. The pieces include cups from the Berkshire Agricultural Society fairs of 1817 and 1820, plus spoons and sugar tongs. Also on view are a stipple Madonna and Child and St Joseph by Fattorini after an Italian Renaissance master, a Winter Landscape by G. H. Currie from 1869, and 19th century yarn-on-silk embroidery. The exhibit also holds an oil gift from Marshall Crane and framed embroidery examples.

Andrews sails to Caribbean for training aboard USS Suffolk County

Wayne L. Andrews a storekeeper seaman in the US Navy and son of Mr. and Mrs. Oren W. Andrews of Cascade Street left Norfolk, Virginia, aboard the USS Suffolk County for training in the Caribbean. The ship, part of Amphibious Squadrons, will join Navy Marine Corps exercises in Vieques, Puerto Rico, during December and January.
