Moonshot Rocket Explodes Delaying Program Months
Cape Canaveral a AP United States fails for the sixth time to send a satellite around the moon as a giant Atlas-Able rocket explodes over the Atlantic. The $40 million mission ends the four shot program and delays future moon shots until more powerful rockets arrive next summer. The 10 story rocket carried a 388 pound spacecraft and aimed for a 60 hour flight to the moon, but disintegrated 70 seconds after launch. NASA and Air Force officials promise investigation and recovery efforts as Soviet advances in lunar exploration loom large.
