Russian Agriculture on the Upswing, Garst Says
Coon Rapids Iowa farmer Roswell Garst says Russia has made a 23 year leap in agricultural progress since 1955. In a New York Times interview he estimates the Soviet bloc is eight years behind the United States in farm production, cites hybrid corn uptake and fertilizer use, and notes tractors replacing horses. He predicts abundant yields this year and says aid should focus on Central and South America, India, and Asia. Garst speaks via a mechanical voice box after a cancer operation.
