An American airman parachuted from a shattered jet into the ocean 20 000 feet below and was rescued by Russian fishermen who greeted him with peace. Captain Hugh Lavallee of Springfield was hoisted to a hovering helicopter after being treated aboard the Soviet vessel Johannes Wave and then flown back to Otis Air Force Base.
