Pay Car Curve on Southern Pacific to be Eliminated
Plans are underway to remove Pay Car Curve two miles west of Benson station as the Southern Pacific restructures the line. The project will straighten seven curves into a five degree sweep, replace a 330 foot trestle with concrete, and cost over $70,000. About 200 workers will relocate tracks and build new bridges, with completion expected before year’s end.

Miss Elsie Toles the County School Superintendent visited the school on Wednesday. The boys basketball court is in good shape and practice runs nightly under Mr Ward with enough players for two teams. Principal H Q Robertson reports a letter from Louie Kempf now at the University of Arizona. The Cochise and Crescent literary societies reorganized with a new division. A Lyceum Course starts October 27 with five numbers. Robertson Rev Levison and Powell visited Ft Huachuca on business. D B White and Mrs Maud Cummings married in El Paso and will travel to Los Angeles San Diego and Richmond before settling near San Francisco to pursue Mr White’s property interests.

A farmer named William Campbell on the mesa has bred a new grain and forage plant from feterita and milo maize. The sample shows two main stalks with twenty one heads from a single seed, with grain larger than milo and amber color. It is claimed drought proof hail proof and grasshopper proof and could yield ninety to a hundred bushels per acre on dry lands near Miramonte ten miles from Benson.
