The Benson area risks losing trade to Willcox unless locals back road improvements. A proposed 35 mile link from Willcox to Benson would attract business, with a potential $5000 bridge site two miles beyond the river and minor relocations to reduce sand wash obstructions.
Orrick Robertson departs Monday for Camp Funston Kansas to join the forces. A Douglas letter to his parents Mr and Mrs H Q Robertson reports generous kindness from Douglas residents including meal tickets and fine dining while awaiting deployment. He, educated and healthy, had an appointment as principal of Pomerene school and preferred peace yet chose to serve his country.

Frank McCullough 17 died Saturday night from a back shot fired during a wiener roast gathering. Jose Valencia, tenant farmer on Juan Cota land near town, confessed and was jailed for trial. Funeral held Monday at the Benson residence with burial in Benson Cemetery.

Brun H. Clark of Battery F 340th Field Artillery writes from Camp Funston Kansas on September 26 1917. He describes arrival processing drills vaccinations and life in camp and advises Benson Arizona recruits to bring only minimal clothing and comfort items while Uncle Sam supplies the rest.
The University of Arizona at Tucson offers a ten week winter course for prospectors and miners from October 15 to December 22. It covers laboratory field and lecture work in mineralogy geology ore deposits surveying assaying and related skills with emphasis on practical prospecting. Entrance requires seriousness and basic arithmetic reading writing ability.
Mrs George Sherrer adds a new room enlarges the screen porch and installs a new roof on her upper town dwelling with John Kippen in charge of the work.
Mr. M. P. Cosby deputy warden for Cochise and Santa Cruz counties visited Nogales and announced open deer season starts October 1 and quail season starts October 15. He noted a hunter may kill one deer if found. Cosby also urged farmers to create fish ponds and the state will supply small fry for stocking waters.
A large Tuesday night audience enjoyed Helen Ware in The Price at the Picture Show. Manager Summers nearly reached standing room only and patrons left pleased with a high class entertainment. Another strong performance is scheduled for tonight.

Turner Road cattleman L A Boedecker says improving the seven mile stretch from St David bridge to the E P and S W road crossing would bring many farmers and stockmen to Benson for trading. He notes current road discourages auto travel and would aid Elgin and Sonoita residents as well.
