Farmers and landowners delay signing leases as H W Etz and A G Smith push a Benson project to attract California operators. With a revised lease offering stronger protections, the venture hinges on landowner consent to fund drilling and reveal underground water resources amid hopes of a new oil field in Benson.

J T Proffitt, M C McKinney and E A Brown won the three top prizes in a Hercules Powder Company shooting contest held by the Benson Rifle and Revolver Club. Proffitt topped with 196 points, McKinney 173, Brown 169, all surpassing 160 points to qualify as marksmen.
Mrs. M. R. Sears of Baldwinsville New York reports a six month stomach disorder improved after using Chamberlain’s Tablets. She says the first dose relieved gas and pains and she continued use until cured. The tablets do not relieve pain but may prevent recurrence after relief.
Hon. Steve Roemer of Phoenix arrived for a brief stay. Roemer has past ties to Benson as bank officer and Wells Fargo agent and now holds a senior position with the firm in Phoenix.
J M Cosby a pioneer of this state died Sunday morning at his home in Pomerene after long illness. He leaves his wife Mary Ella and two sons M Powell and J R Cosby. Born December 1 1849 in Hanover Virginia he helped support his family during the Civil War era. He moved west to California then Salt River Valley and Benson where he built the Benson Canal aiding irrigation and the growth of Pomerene. He was generous and sympathetic, often helping others.
St David hosts Pioneers Day with an entertaining program barbecue picnic and dance. Outdoor sports including bronco busting and baseball are planned for a great celebration likely drawing many county residents. C W Mangum of Tucson section patrolman for the Mountain States Company traveled east yesterday en route home.
