Benson defeated Tucson High 41 to 39 after a five minute overtime in a hard fought capital city basketball clash. Tucson led 23 to 20 at halftime but Benson tied it 37 all and held the visitors to two points in the final period. The game highlighted Benson’s grit and sportsmanship.

New York Jan 30 United States Steel reports earnings far surpassing prior records. Directors declare an extra 1.75 percent dividend plus the regular 1.75 percent quarterly payout for Q4 1916. 1916 total earnings reach 333.6 million, doubling 1907's prior record of 160.9 million.
In Bisbee Arizona on January 29 the Bisbee Democrats, once ardent Hunt supporters, capitulated and presented Governor Campbell a camel sculpture of copper slag. The gesture came during a reception at Adams Tombstone Prospector where Campbell held the camel in his left hand all evening.

The Benson girls defeated the Tucson state champions 20 to 19 in Herring Hall, Tucson, after a fast, evenly matched game. Benson led most of the contest with all players contributing, while Tucson fell for the first time in three years.
